SPRINGWATER -- The hallmark of New York Demolition Derbies will again kick off the 2012 season of smashing next spring as Heavy Hitting Productions (heavyhittingproduction.info) will host Metal Destruction III at Firemen's Field in downtown Cuba, Allegany County, New York.
The third installment of the $3,000-to-win limited weld smashfest is set for some time this spring.
The event will feature a full card of one-and-dones, each class with a 35-car limit.
The money class, featuring the old iron bruisers that have come to personify the Metal Destruction legacy, will boast a purse of $6,000, a top-five payout with $3,000 reserved for the winner, and Heavy Hitter award of $1,000.
Last year, Andy Wolfanger (Livonia, NY) and Frank Palmer (Trumansburg, NY) dueled to the finish while Mike Adams (Trumansburg, NY) collected the heavy hitter award. In the first year, Brett Relyea (Owego, NY) triumphed over Wayne Clemans and Wolfanger.
The field, last year limited to 30 cars, was expanded to 35 for 2012.
"We had plenty of room and plenty of interest," said Heavy Hitting Productions mastermind Kenny Swingle. "So we opted to put more seats at the head table."
Early registration is $150; and goes up to $225 after March 1.
The Stock class, won in 2010 by Josh Decker and in 2009 by Teri Relyea, will be back with a $1,200-to-win one-and-done for a field up to 35 cars. Entries are $75 until March 1, where they will go up to $125. A Heavy Hitting award of $300 awaits the wildest pilot in the division and the top five runners will be paid.
The new addition to the Metal Destruction III menu is the 80s-and-new chain-and-go division. Paying $500 to win, this 35-car field will pay back the top five and reward the maddog with $100.
"We added this as a way for the locals to get back involved," Swingle said, indicating the initial installment of Metal Destruction was packed with local drivers, but those builders were missing in 2010. "I think we went in a direction opposite where those builders wanted to be.
"They aren't so much worried about some of the other things; they are the guys who want to kick the windows out and smash a car. So, we're opening a place for them, as well."
The compacts will also return this year; the 35-car field will payback five spots with $500 going to the winner and $100 to the heavy hitter.
Entry fees for both the 80s & Newer and Compacts are $35.00 through March 1 and $65 thereafter.
"This event offers something for everyone, from the novice to the experienced, pro-caliber builder, you'll get to see it," Swingle said. "We just hope the fans are ready and the weather holds off.
"This has the potential to be the biggest year yet."
The derbies are set to begin at 3:00 pm. General admission for adults is $12, kids aged 6-10 are $8 and children under 5 are free. Admission gates open at 11 am. Pit Gates open at 9 am. Pit access is $20, and vendors can set up for $50.
Heavy Hitting Productions is located in Springwater, Livingston County. They host a handful of derbies annually. In 2010, they hosted two of the richest events in New York, including Metal Destruction II and the Empire State Championships. To find out more, visit heavyhittingproductions.info.
